Inn Capt M S Kohli, Indias legendary mountaineer is the founder of The Legend Inn group of hotels which promote the spirit of adventure through their unique Himalayan theme which include rooms named against legendary mountaineers or Himalayan peaks. Capt Kohli was born and brought up in Haripur in the hilly and rugged environ of the North-West frontier of Pakistan in 1931. At the age of seven he gained his first summit in the Karakorams and later emerged unscathed through several harrowing encounters during the carnage of the 1947 partition. He subsequently carved out a spectacular career spanning the Indian navy, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Air India where he was the first man in the world to conceive and promote trekking in the Himalayas on a global basis. In 1965 Capt Kohli received worldwide recognition for leading the first successful Indian mountaineering expedition to Mount Everest which put nine climbers on the summit, a world record which India held for seventeen years. Prior to that in 1962 he with two other mountaineers spent three nights at 27,650 ft on Everest, two without oxygen; the only men to ever do so. He climbed Nanda Kot in 1959 and made the maiden ascent of the highly challenging Annapurna III in 1961. From1965 to 1968 he led the worlds longest and highly sensitive Indo-American expedition involving the CIA to install nuclear powered sensors on Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot. In 1977 Capt Kohli helped and joined Sir Edmund Hillary in organizing, From the Ocean to the Sky Jet-boat Expedition up the Ganges which heralded white-water rafting in India. In 1989 in consultation with Sir Edmund Hillary he founded the Himalayan Environment Trust to save the Himalayas for future generations. Capt Kohli has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan, Arjuna Award and Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award.
